Ellner Update

Ellner Memorial Starts Tonight!

The Kenilworth Chess Club's annual Irving Ellner Memorial tournament begins tonight. Here are the details:

7th Irving Ellner Memorial
April 10-May 8, 2014

  • USCF-Rated
  • 4-round Swiss
  • Time Control: G/45 + 5 second per move increment.
  • A player must keep score if he has 5 minutes or more remaining.
  • Rounds: 8:30 p.m. on April 10th, 17th, 24th and May 8th. There is no game on May 1st!
  • Entry Fee: $10
  • Prize Fund: $150 b/ 16 entries. If there are more than 16 players, a 5th round will be added & the prize fund will be increased accordingly.
  • Prizes: To be announced.
  • Register before 8:25 p.m. @ Kenilworth Community Center, 575 Boulevard, Kenilworth, N.J.
  • Late-joins accepted until round 2 is paired. 1 bye allowed. Must commit prior to round 3.

Carrelli Wins Kenilworth KO

Don Carrelli won the Kenilworth Knockout held March 13-27. John Jackmin was 2nd and Greg Tomkovich was 3rd.

Kenilworth Knockout Starts On Thursday

Kenilworth Knockout
  • Starts on March 13th and runs thru March 27th.
  • Non-Rated
  • 3 Rounds-KO. 8 players per section. 2 Games per round. Players knocked out in rounds 1 & 2 will play the remaining weeks in a swiss-paired "wild card" section.
  • Time Control: G/25 + 5 second increment.
  • Rounds: 8:30 and 9:40 or ASAP from March 13-27
  • EF: $3. Prizes: 50% to first, 30% to 2nd, 20% to 3rd (wild card winner).
Tied matches will be broken by an Armageddon game where White gets 12 minutes + a 3 second increment vs. Black's 10+3 & draw odds.

Sherry Wins Bughouse Tourney

Bob Sherry won last night's Bughouse Tournament with 6.0/6.

LM Mark Kernighan, John Jackmin and Greg Tomkovich tied for 2nd, with 2.0.

Each player played 2 games with 3 different partners.

Balakrishnan Repeats As Kenilworth Champ



NM Praveen Balakrishnan won his 2nd straight Kenilworth CC Championship last night, becoming the 1st player to successfully defend his title since FM Steve Stoyko did so in 2006 & 2007.
