Summer Tourney - Round 3

There were just 5 games played and the club closed very early, at 10 p.m.

Bob Sherry extended his already large lead to 4 points by picking-up his 5th & 6th wins of the tourney. No one else has more than 1!

Greg Tomkovich took sole possession of 2nd place with a draw while John Moldovan scored 1.5 from 2 simultaneous games and jumped from a tie for 12th place into a tie for 3rd.

Geoff McAuliffe also had a victory.

Summer Tourney - Round 2

7 8 more players joined, expanding the field to 16 17.

Bob Sherry won twice and extended his lead to 2.5 points.

LM Mark Kernighan, Greg Tomkovich, Bobby DeMarco and Anthony Tang also had victories.

Summer Tourney - Round 1

With the inclement weather, there was a small turnout (just 9 players) and all the games were over before 10:15 p.m.

Bob Sherry (1812) won twice against Jun Tang (1333). Jim Carr (1624) and Albert Tang (1347) also had victories. Michael Goeller (2094) and Greg Tomkovich (1700) drew.

Entries are usually accepted through July 4, however the TD reserves the right to cut-off entries at an earlier date, if the field becomes too large.

Summer Tournament Starts Tonight!

The Kenilworth Chess Club's fun, friendly, yet highly competitive Summer Tournament starts Thursday night at 8:00 p.m.

Here are the rules :
  • The entry fee is $5.00.
  • The tournament will run from June 13th through August 29th.
  • The event is not rated.
  • The time control is G/60.
  • G/55+5 (delay) may be used if there is mutual agreement between paired players. Increment settings are not allowed.
  • You may play anyone who is entered. The first time you play an opponent, the lower rated or unrated player has White. In subsequent games against the same opponent you alternate colors.
    If both players are unrated or have identical ratings, they toss for initial color.
  • You may not play the same opponent more than four times in the tournament.
  • You get one point for a win, one half point for a draw, and zero for a loss.
  • You may play as many or as few games as you like, but no more than two in one night. The more you play the more points you can win.
  • All games are to be played at the Kenilworth Chess Club during normal operating hours.
  • The winner is the person who has the most points at the end of the tournament.
  • The prizes are 60% for first place, 30% for second, and 10% for third.

Bob Sherry won last year. Other past winners of this popular event include LM Scott Massey (2004), LM Mark Kernighan (2005, 2011), Greg Tomkovich (2006), Ari Minkov (2007, 2010), John Moldovan (2008) and Ian Mangion (2009).

Kernighan Wins Ellner Memorial

LM Mark Kernighan won the 6th Irving Ellner Memorial, which was held April 11-May 16.

Kevin Chen was 2nd. Bobby DeMarco won the U1900 prize.

Pat Mazzillo, Chris Constantino and Robert Vinson tied for U1600 honors.

LM Mark Kernighan took over the lead by beating Kevin Chen.

Chen, Ian Mangion (who late-joined), Jim Carr and Robert De Marco are a half-point back.
