Summer Tourney - Round 3

John Jackmin (1858), former KCC President Joe Demetrick (1672) and his daughter Angelika (150) joined. We now have 21 players!

Bob Sherry extended his lead to 2 full points by taking 2 games from Joseph Dovydaitis. John Moldovan moved into 2nd place by winning a simul against Anthony Tang and Kevin Chen.

Jackmin, Bob Pelican, Paul Gottlieb and Luis Ruales also had victories. Geoff McAuliffe and J. Demetrick drew.

Summer Tourney - Round 2

7 players late-joined, swelling the field to 18. Bob Sherry took over the lead by going 2-0 vs. Pat Mazzillo.

Other winners included Mark Kernighan, Kevin Chen (1989) , Dr. Richard Lewis, Bob Pelican, Geoff McAuliffe (1600), Joseph Dovydaitis (unrated) and John Moldovan, who played a simul. Greg Tomkovich & Paul Gottlieb drew.

Dr. Richard Lewis (1739) defeated Joe Renna (1442) and Bob Pelican (1608). Bob Sherry (1812) scored 1.5/2 against Paul Gottlieb (1607). LM Mark Kernighan (2257) and Pat Mazzillo (1355) also had victories. Greg Tomkovich (1682) drew John Moldovan (1795).

7 of the 11 players did not play in last year's opener.

Summer Tournament Starts Tonight!

The Kenilworth Chess Club's fun, friendly, yet highly competitive Summer Tournament starts tonight at 8:00 p.m.

Here are the rules :
  • The 2014 Summer Tournament will run from June 5th through August 28th.
  • The entry fee is $5.00.
  • The event is not rated.
  • The time control is G/60.
  • G/55+5 (delay) may be used if there is mutual agreement between paired players. Increment settings are not allowed.
  • You may play anyone who is entered. The first time you play an opponent, the lower rated or unrated player has White. In subsequent games against the same opponent you alternate colors.
    If both players are unrated or have identical ratings, they toss for initial color.
  • You may not play the same opponent more than four times in the tournament.
  • All games are to be played at the Kenilworth Chess Club during normal operating hours.
  • You may play up to 2 games per week. You can skip weeks but the more you play the more points you can accrue.
  • You get one point for a win, one half point for a draw and zero for a loss. No bye points are awarded.
  • The winner is the person who has the most points at the end of the tournament.
  • The prizes are 60% for first place, 30% for second, and 10% for third.

Bob Sherry won last year and in 2012. Other past winners of this popular event include LM Scott Massey (2004), LM Mark Kernighan (2005, 2011), Greg Tomkovich (2006), Ari Minkov (2007, 2010), John Moldovan (2008) and Ian Mangion (2009).

May 1st will be used a make-up date for those who were unable to play last week.

Ellner Memorial Starts Tonight!

The Kenilworth Chess Club's annual Irving Ellner Memorial tournament begins tonight. Here are the details:

7th Irving Ellner Memorial
April 10-May 8, 2014

  • USCF-Rated
  • 4-round Swiss
  • Time Control: G/45 + 5 second per move increment.
  • A player must keep score if he has 5 minutes or more remaining.
  • Rounds: 8:30 p.m. on April 10th, 17th, 24th and May 8th. There is no game on May 1st!
  • Entry Fee: $10
  • Prize Fund: $150 b/ 16 entries. If there are more than 16 players, a 5th round will be added & the prize fund will be increased accordingly.
  • Prizes: To be announced.
  • Register before 8:25 p.m. @ Kenilworth Community Center, 575 Boulevard, Kenilworth, N.J.
  • Late-joins accepted until round 2 is paired. 1 bye allowed. Must commit prior to round 3.

Carrelli Wins Kenilworth KO

Don Carrelli won the Kenilworth Knockout held March 13-27. John Jackmin was 2nd and Greg Tomkovich was 3rd.
